Low Down Da Sinista - Coming For Your Soul (1996)

By '96, the hoarse, smoky mumbling of Three 6 Mafia had become the norm for Memphis rap. So when Low Down Da Sinista released their first (and unfortunately last) album Coming For Your Soul, it was nice to hear a more aggressive, visceral tone reminiscent of bands like N.W.A. and Geto Boys in the same familiar Memphis execution. In his mid-twenties, Lowdown is recording this 50-minute, 17-track cassette with a few friends and his younger sister. His debut release is full of paranoia and serves as an interesting commentary on stress and mental illness. There are lots of references to going through tough stuff, visions and thoughts of "giving up." It uses the hellish landscape of the horrorcore genre to discuss these topics, which are much more complex than many people think. It's a great analysis of mental health and trying to have a positive outcome in a negative life. Low Down Da Sinista died in 2012, the official cause cited as kidney failure.
